Three goals in nine minutes. Orlando Pride’s backline was exposed and you can not leave those open spaces to a team like North Carolina. All three North Carolina’s goals came from poor coverage on the right flank. North Carolina exploited that particular side throughout the half. The first goal for North Carolina, was an own goal by Pride’s defender Montefusco. The second one, North Carolina’s winger Smith crossed the ball to Daniels and she capitalized. The third, Pickett had a run through the right flank, and crossed it to Taylor Smith who scored a true Golazo. In the 15th minute, Darian Jenkins came up big for the Pride and scored a phenomenal banger from outside the box. Rowland (NC keeper) just looked and stared at the ball going in. After Orlando’s goal, the team came back to life. Both Cluff and Tymrak started to be very influential in attacking plays for the Orlando Pride. North Carolina had a hard time controlling Tymrak’s dribbling. Before the end of the half, Moorhouse had a huge save after Pickett’s left footed shot, the Courage could’ve had their fourth. As well, North Carolina’s backline came up big after a shot from outside by Courtney Petersen.
In the second half, Coach Cromwell made three substitutions. Amy Turner subbed in for Strom, Gunny Jonsdottir for Cluff, and Abello for Pruitt. Coach Cromwell’s subs came up big and changed the pace of the game for Orlando. Tymrak started connecting very well with Gunny and Abello. In the 56th minute, Orlando scored their second goal of the night after a superb assist by Kerry Abello to Darian Jenkins who scored her first brace wearing a Pride jersey. It was 2-3, and the Orlando Pride started to gain momentum. In the 64th minute, Abello had a 1v1 with Rowland and her shot came close, this after a superb assist by Meggie Dougherty Howard. In the 70th minute, North Carolina’s Kerolin missed a goal that could’ve been the nail in the coffin for the Pride but the ball did not go in. After that Orlando stole North Carolina’s momentum and was able to almost level the game through Kerry Abello that became one the best players in the second half for Orlando. Abello became dangerous on the left flank for North Carolina, showing off her 1v1 skills while attempting to find the open space. But unfortunately, In the 89th minute Debinha hold off Orlando’s defense and scored a wonderful strike near the left post putting the 4th in the score sheet for North Carolina. Orlando Pride lost at home 4-2 against the North Carolina Courage, here at LPO, we praise the level of the comeback they had in the second half. Orlando will face Gotham on April 23rd, ending their participation in the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup.
