Defensive Showdown: Orlando City vs Inter Miami Match Analysis

Miami began the game with dominant ball possession and soon crafted two great scoring chances. Shortly after the match started, Luis Suarez outmaneuvered Brekalo and took a shot from the left side towards the right goalpost.

Pedro Gallese dove to the ground and made a crucial save to prevent Miami from taking the lead. In the 14th minute, the Lions began creating opportunities. Muriel executed a free kick from the left side of the penalty area, aiming for McGuire near the post. However, the flick narrowly missed the target and hit the netting on the outside. Shortly after, Torres made a run towards the end line and attempted to deliver a cross to Angulo, but the ball was intercepted by Drake Callender.

McGuire attempted a volley shot following a high cross in the 17th minute, however, the defense managed to deflect it out for an Orlando corner. The set piece cross from Lodeiro narrowly missed Torres’ head at the back post and went out harmlessly for a goal kick.

Immediately after, Orlando gained control of the ball and Torres tried a shot from the top of the area with his right foot, narrowly missing the top right corner. “Cartagena’s quick reflexes prevented a pass into the box for Suarez, resulting in a corner kick, however Miami failed to capitalize on the opportunity.” Orlando had a good opportunity in the 32nd minute, with Muriel making a precise pass to Ojeda at the top of the penalty area. Despite Ojeda’s quick shot, Callender managed to make an impressive diving save with one hand. A minute afterwards, Callender came up with a big save to block a shot by Muriel from outside the penalty area. In the 35th minute, Matias Rojas attempted a goal with a free kick Schlegel gave away near the right corner of the field. Gallese managed to deflect the shot over the crossbar, allowing Orlando to then successfully clear the resulting corner kick. In the 41st minute of the first half, Marcelo Weigandt made a final attempt at scoring a goal by leaping into the action from his position as a right-back player. However, his shot from the top of the box veered significantly off course to the left and failed to hit the target.

In the second half, both teams struggled to create scoring opportunities, and the game became even more sluggish as fatigue set in. Gallese had a frightening experience around the one-hour mark when he leapt to catch a cross from Rojas. Suarez accidentally collided with the goalkeeper while he was exposed, causing Gallese to fall hard and require medical attention. Despite a brief interruption, he managed to carry on. Orlando had numerous opportunities for quick counterattacks in the second half, but they struggled to capitalize on them in the scoring area. Ojeda was unable to deliver an effective cross during a promising attack in the 69th minute. Muriel initiated several attacking moves with his fancy footwork, resulting in Taylor receiving a yellow card for fouling him after Muriel successfully dispossessed the Miami winger. Subsequently, Muriel intercepted the ball from Sergio Busquets in what seemed to be a clean play, but the referee deemed it a foul on the Colombian player. This decision angered Muriel, leading him to kick the ball away and receive a booking from the referee. In the 74th minute of the match, Miami had a promising opportunity for a second-half goal when a pass from the left side by substitute Jordi Alba was delivered into the box. If the ball had reached Leonardo Campana, Miami might have scored and potentially emerged victorious. Nevertheless, Cartagena managed to avert the danger and prevent Miami from scoring.

Two minutes later, the Lions launched a counterattack. Torres found Muriel, but the pass gave the defense an opportunity to regroup and when the forward attempted to make a move to create a shot, he fumbled the ball and the opportunity vanished. In the 79th minute, Muriel narrowly missed the target with his shot. In the 88th minute, substitute player Dagur Dan Thorhallsson dashed down the right side but missed with his shot, hitting the net on the outside. In the last six minutes of added time, Yutaro Tsukada, a player selected in the team’s 2024 MLS SuperDraft, made his debut in the MLS by replacing Torres. Tsukada had the opportunity to become an unexpected hero when a ball came towards him in the penalty area. He took a shot, but unfortunately, it hit the ground and missed the goal in the final moments of the game. Inter Miami, in first place, did not have Messi playing, but this does not diminish Orlando City’s impressive defensive display. This game marked only the second time this season that the Herons failed to score, ending a streak of five games where Miami scored three or more goals. Cartagena’s standout performance as a center back was crucial in ensuring the team kept a clean sheet.
