The historic Orlando Pride emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over Kansas City Current, earning a place in the NWSL Championship. Debinha put them in the lead initially, with McCutcheon equalizing before goals from Banda and Marta. Despite DiBernardo’s late penalty for Current, it wasn’t sufficient. This marks the first time the Pride has made it to the finals.
In the 11th minute, Adriana made a mistake which led to the first opportunity. Despite having a chance in the 15th minute, Banda was not given a penalty. Marta, Abello, and Angelina all had moments to score for the Pride. The Current also had their own chances, but were unable to capitalize on them.
Banda made a skillful play on the left side, defeating Mace in the 15th minute. The Pride held onto the ball and generated numerous opportunities. Marta managed to steal the ball in the 32nd minute, but her attempt on goal was thwarted. Current surged ahead in the 33rd minute thanks to a goal by Debinha. Eight minutes after, the Pride managed to equalize the match with a goal. McCutcheon, who had also scored in the last game, skillfully tapped in a cross from Watt. Despite not having scored since April 29, 2023, she has now scored in two consecutive playoff games.
Hines commended the first goal for its exceptional teamwork and also praised McCutcheon for her goal. During the 65th minute of the game, Cooper kicked the ball across the field, Prince’s attempt was stopped, and Chawinga’s shot went over the goal. The Pride came close to making a costly error in the 71st minute when Angelina lost the ball. Chawinga’s shot missed the target before she entered the penalty area. Hines decided to make some changes in the team in the 79th minute.
In the 82nd minute, Banda managed to get the ball and passed it to Marta. The captain of the Pride dribbled to her left and made a pass that resulted in a goal. Banda praised Marta for her goal, recognizing her scoring abilities. Sams also praised Marta, calling her the GOAT. However, the celebrations were interrupted as Banda required medical attention. Marta attempted another goal in injury time but was unsuccessful. The Current tried to score quickly but faced a tough defense from the Pride. A substitution was made in the seventh minute of added time, giving Celia a chance to play one more time before retiring. Mace’s shot was blocked, leading to a corner kick. After a video review, a penalty kick was awarded. DiBernardo made a successful conversion, making the score 3-2.
In the end, the Pride emerged victorious with a 3-2 win. Hines commended the rival’s tactics and admired the effort and motivation displayed by his team. The players put in a strong performance. The Pride are known for taking the lead in games and had not previously made a comeback to secure a victory this season. The NWSL Championship final will be held at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, where they will face the Washington Spirit.
