Ever since Atlanta United joined the MLS in 2017, their rivalry with Orlando City has heavily sided with Atlanta. Orlando has only managed to secure victories four times in total against Atlanta, including both regular season matches this year. However, tonight at Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando made a significant stride towards turning the series into a genuine rivalry by knocking Atlanta out of the playoffs with a 1-0 win in front of 25,046 fans.
In the first half, Ramiro Enrique scored the only goal for Orlando City following a scrambled corner kick. Despite their offensive struggles in the postseason, the Lions excelled defensively, limiting Atlanta to just seven shots, none of which were on target. This solid defensive display helped Orlando City secure a spot in the Eastern Conference final for the first time in history. Head Coach Oscar Pareja commented on the incredible energy brought by the fans, highlighting the vibrant atmosphere in the stadium and strong fan support that solidifies the exceptional culture of the club. The win was a response to the remarkable backing from the supporters.
Orlando created an early chance as Ojeda delivered a promising pass from the left side to Torres, who unfortunately missed the target with his header. Thorhallsson’s shot in the fifth minute was blocked by Guzan, deemed offside. Enrique had a close header in the 10th minute, but it found Guzan’s arms. Ojeda’s shot narrowly missed the top corner in the 23rd minute, as Santos’ cross was headed off target by Araujo minutes later.
Orlando broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Enrique capitalized on a corner kick, deflecting the cross off Gregersen to give his team a 1-0 lead. Enrique cited his anticipation and gratitude for allowing him to score the crucial goal, expressing happiness for the team’s progress.
Daniel Rios replaced Thiare in the 43rd minute after repeated fouls, with Enrique missing the target in the 44th minute. Orlando entered halftime with a narrow lead, dominating in possession, shots, shots on target, and passing accuracy. Pareja acknowledged the challenging game, highlighting the team’s exceptional performance in the first half, with Atlanta stepping up in the second. Muriel, substituted for Ojeda, made a significant impact in midfield, while McGuire struggled with turnovers. Orlando managed to hold off Atlanta’s late surge in added time, emerging victorious with defensive and offensive contributions from key players. The Lions controlled ball possession, shot accuracy, corners, and passing efficiency, showcasing their well-rounded defensive performance.
Thorhallsson shared his relief in reaching the conference final, crediting the team’s strong start and consistent play. Orlando head into the next match against New York Red Bulls determined to secure a win and reach the final, with Pareja expressing confidence in the team’s competitive level.
