It was a beautiful Saturday night at Inter&Co Stadium, and the atmosphere felt just right for the homecoming of former Orlando City legend Antonio Carlos. But the feel-good story didn’t last long. Once again, the Lions were reminded of their biggest problem: without a real number nine, all that possession is basically useless. It was also the birthday of Orlando City’s mascot Kingston the lion.
Orlando controlled large portions of the game but couldn’t do anything with it, falling 1-0 to the Houston Dynamo. Hector Herrera scored the only goal in the 75th minute, and that was all Houston needed.
Houston came out aggressive, creating two good chances in the opening minutes. Orlando eventually settled in and started bossing the midfield, but it was obvious they were missing that focal point up top. With Tiago, Tyrese Spicer, and Braian Ojeda leading the attack, there just wasn’t anyone who could hold up the ball or make those dangerous runs in the box like a proper striker.
Their best moment early on came in the 10th minute when Tiago whipped in a perfect cross, but Spicer got his timing wrong and headed it wide. After that, the game turned into a choppy, physical battle. Eduard Atuesta picked up a yellow card in the 18th minute for a reckless tackle and had to be careful the rest of the night.
Defensively, Orlando looked solid. Robin Jansson was a rock at the back, Ivan Angulo had a fantastic game shutting down Houston’s speedy winger Lawrence Ennali, and Taifi brought the energy on the flanks.
The half ended with some real excitement. Houston nearly scored off a corner in the 40th minute, but Maxime Crepeau pulled off a huge save. Then, right before halftime, Spicer played a great ball to Tiago, whose rocket of a shot smashed off the crossbar. So close.
At the break, Orlando had more of the ball and better expected goals, but they had zero shots on target from five attempts. Houston was dangerous on the break and had nine shots, even if they couldn’t finish.
Orlando tried to inject some energy off the bench, bringing on Justin Ellis for Spicer around the 58th minute. They came closest in the 66th when a corner from Tincho led to a shot by Ojeda that was cleared off the line—with Antonio Carlos throwing his body in the way to save his new team.
That moment seemed to flip the script. In the 75th minute, Ennali finally got the better of Jansson in a 1-v-1, drove into the box, and although his first shot was blocked, Hector Herrera was there to smash home the rebound. 1-0 Houston.
From then on, Orlando pushed forward desperately. Harvey Sarajian came on and brought some fresh spark, but Houston’s defense—led by the excellent Antonio Carlos—held firm.
To make matters worse, Atuesta had to come off late, and in stoppage time Ojeda got a yellow for a frustrated tackle, giving Houston one last chance to run down the clock.
It was a classic away win for Houston: soak up the pressure, stay organized, and punish the other team when they overcommit.
